Microfiber - PU (polyurethane) or vegan leather has become a popular alternative to traditional animal leather, especially for those seeking cruelty-free and environmentally-conscious materials for footwear. Unlike leather made from animal hides, PU leather is a synthetic material created from a plastic polymer. This makes it an ethical choice for those who want to avoid animal products while still enjoying the look and feel of leather.

Micro fiber vegan leather is also lighter and more flexible than many types of animal leather, which can make shoes made from this material more comfortable to wear. The flexibility of the material also allows it to be used in a wide range of footwear, from casual sneakers to formal shoes, offering both style and practicality. In addition, unlike suede or natural leather, PU leather is resistant to water and stains, making it easier to care for and more suitable for everyday use in various weather conditions. The downside of microfiber leather compared to natural leather - Is its shorter lifespan. ( 5-6 years )

Microfiber - PU - Vegan leather is a Non-Animal product. The Vegan leather we use at Lola Ramona for our "Mix & Match" concept is described like this:

Production Process:

  1. Microfiber Weaving: Polyester or nylon fibers are woven tightly to create a dense, durable microfiber base.
  2. Polyurethane Coating: The microfiber is coated with polyurethane to give it a leather-like texture, enhancing water resistance and wearability.
  3. Texturing & Finishing: Textures and colors are added to achieve the look of real leather, often using embossing or coloring techniques.
  4. Drying and Curing: The final material is dried and cured, solidifying the bond between the microfiber base and PU coating.

This process results in a high-performance, vegan-friendly material that’s often more sustainable than animal leather due to lower resource usage and less waste. Microfiber vegan leather is breathable, making it a popular, cruelty-free choice in footwear.

We've gathered some of our previous sneakers featuring PU in the images below for inspiration. Please note that the colors in our Mix & Match collection change periodically, so the available colors may vary.
